1. Write in a Journal
We all need someone to talk to from time to time, but we don’t always have someone reliable to tell our thoughts or problems to. So writing in a journal can be a great outlet for dealing with everyday stresses. All you have to do is set aside time each day whether it be during your lunch break, at bedtime, or whenever works for you, to jot down your thoughts. This is a great way to learn how to clear your mind, decluttering and de-stressing your mind in the process.
2. Take a Relaxing Walk
After a hard day, walking is probably the last thing on your to-do list. However, the benefits are worth the sacrifice because walking is an instant de-stressor and a good example of how to clear your mind. We all have countless tasks to get done each and every day, pay this months bills, clean the house, get supper cooked, take care of our pets, take care of our families, not to mention the stresses at work like boss and customer complaints and deadlines.
By the time I am finished with all that, I am exhausted and don’t even want to think about another thing. However, the stresses of the day just seem to disappear as I walk down my street and take in all of natures beauty. I find it very relaxing and enjoy the alone time; I even leave my cell phone at home.
3. Learn How to Say No
Learn how to clear your mind by teaching yourself how to say no. I, like so many others, had a hard time saying no, and I found myself saying “yes” to favors or invites even when I didn’t really have the time or want to do them. I felt so much unnecessary stress in my life when I didn’t say no to something I really didn’t want to do.
I had gotten into the habit of saying yes to everything, and it just became mentally exhausting, so I restrained myself to say no when needed, saving myself a lot of undue stress. So, when asked to do something, consider if it is practical for you to do, if it is going to cause you added stress, or if it’s just something you don’t want to do, and just say no.
4. Make a Positive Out of the Negative
You and only you are responsible for what goes through your mind, yet we somehow let our minds be clouded by negative thoughts. I have found that on days that I am particularly negative, it is almost impossible to be in a good mood. Once you find out how to clear your mind of negative thoughts, you will feel less stressed and more relaxed. I find that distracting myself anytime negative thoughts come to mind is an easy way to change my outlook.
Take a mental inventory of your movie collection or make a shopping list in your head are two good ways to distract yourself. I also know that when I am around negative people, I tend to go toward that negative frame of mind. So maybe it is time for some new friends, ones who bring a positive into your life. And one other way that I have found to make a positive out of a negative is to rethink my situation, make lemonade out of lemons so to speak.
For example, if I find myself delayed for any reason I try not to think about what I am missing but rather I try to find ways to occupy my time, make phone calls, catch up on work, anything that makes the situation a positive one instead of a negative one.
5. Get Organized
“What am I supposed to do today?” “Where are my car keys?” If questions like these and others fill your head daily, then I can tell you how to clear your mind and ease some of your stress. Questions like these and many others are mental energy drainers, especially if they build and build. Becoming organized in areas where you can, is one way to avoid the overwhelming stressed out feeling that disorganization can cause.
Find one place, such as a hook by the front door, to put your car keys and always put them there so you never have to guess as to where they may be. Get yourself a daily planner, write a menu for the week in it, schedule a day for shopping and put it in your planner. When you plan ahead, it takes out the guesswork and alleviates stress so that you can better enjoy your day.
6. Go Stargazing
Now, if you live in the city, this one may be a little more difficult for you to do as city lights are not stars friends. I live in the country and the night sky is absolutely beautiful when it is full of stars. Stargazing is one of the most relaxing, wonderful ways how to clear your mind. Billions and billions of dancing little glittering stars fill the sky, occasionally shooting across the horizon in a stream of light. Grab a blanket, pillow, whatever comfort item you want, a cup of tea or cocoa and go out and enjoy what Mother Nature has given us. Let your mind go, and all your worries will just melt away.
7. Get on the Literary Train
Another way how to clear your mind is to grab a book. If you have a problem like I do with your mind not wanting to shut down at the end of the day, do what I do and relax with a good book. I love mysteries and horror stories and find reading them a great way to clear my mind of the stresses of the day. Reading is a way to escape the world and disappear into the life of someone else. I tend to avoid self-help books because they only make me think of all the things that aren’t right in my life. Most of the time, reading helps me fight insomnia, and I fall asleep easily.
8. Try a Nice Warm, Relaxing Bath
When my day has been just overwhelming, and nothing else seems to help, I take a warm, relaxing bath. My whole day simply disappears when I lower myself into that warm bubbly water. I enjoy using a few drops of lavender oil in my bath for a more calming experience. I always ask my family for some alone time so that I can clear my mind and be the mom and wife I want to be.
9. Find a Hobby You Love
I have so many different hobbies that I don’t even know where to start, and each one of them allows me to clear my mind and calm my soul for just a little bit. Some of my favorite pastimes are painting, drawing, and knitting but no matter what your pleasure is, just jump into it wholeheartedly and forget about the outside world.
Things like family squabbles, financial problems, and problems at work are forgotten when you immerse yourself in something that you are passionate about. There are so many options out there I am sure you will find one that you fall in love with. Maybe it’s fishing, hunting, or even just taking a drive, whatever it is, do what you love. Do it with enthusiasm and do it with pride, become a pro at it but no matter what you do, have fun doing it.
10. Ask for Help
I probably have the hardest time with this one because I am independent and find it very hard to ask anyone for anything, let alone for help. When I think too hard on a problem, I get bogged down with all the cluttered thoughts in my head, and the answer is nowhere to be seen. I have learned that when this happens, I need to ask for help.
No matter if it’s from a family member or from a friend as long as the perspective is fresh and new and offers a solution. The load is lightened off your shoulders when you ask for assistance. You may be overwhelmed with the amount of housework you have to do before day's end, ask your partner to wash the dishes, wash a load of clothes, or maybe even cook supper. Maybe ask your kids to help by taking out the trash or setting the table. Whatever the problem is, help is always a welcome answer.
There is no need to spend a ton of money or a lot of time to clear your mind after a stressful day. And I have to say, although it may feel like it is helpful at the time, drinking alcohol is never the answer and often makes the situation worse. Find your stress relief and get to it!!
